C2E2 2013 review: CHIMICHANGA #1

What the fuck is it with Eric Powell and the circus?!  Well, it’s definitely his strong suit, so he should probably stick with it.  Wrinkles Traveling Circus could have rolled right out of the pages of THE GOON, except for one thing:  they really don’t have many great attractions.  They have a fortune teller with the “amazing two-eyed goat.”  Or how about “Randy, the man with the strength of a slightly larger man?”  Eh . . . sounds more like MONTY PYTHON’S FLYING CIRCUS.

They actually do have a decent attraction:  the bearded girl.  No, not a bearded WOMAN, a bearded GIRL.  We only know her as Kid, but sure enough, she’s a little girl, maybe five, with a very impressive beard and an unhealthy obsession with chimichangas.  One day, she sells a lock of her beard hair to a witch in exchange for a funny looking “rock” and a Radio Flyer wagon.  What she doesn’t know is that the rock was spat out by a freaky looking bird and is actually an egg, which hatches, revealing a giant, hairy Bigfoot-ish monster.

And now, the circus has a real attraction!

Yes, the story is that fucking crazy.  Many of you are probably familiar with writer and artist Eric Powell’s work on THE GOON, so you know his style, and you can probably envision just how off the wall this book looks.  Words don’t do it justice.  Even everything mentioned here is just the tip of the iceberg.  There’s also a paranoid, talking fish, and the real reason the witch wanted the Kid's beard hair, and . . . well, you just have to get the book and experience its lunacy for yourself.  Do it.  You won’t regret it.
